What is Obia? Its the name of Afro-diasporic sorcery & spiritual practices

once found in parts the West Indies.

The music tells tales from the Caribbean, their people & folklore, A story of

degradation of the spirit, resilience and re- emergence of being.

In the darkest of soils, the most potent of herbs take root.

The writing began on band leader Tristan’s island home of Barbados, drawing

influences from his childhood, Obia maps the connections between the Afro-

diasporas’ shared history & musical forms.

Once meeting Glasgow nu jazz scene stalwarts Norman Vilaroux, Mathew Kilner

& Jakob Gueye combined with Afro-Latin percussionist Duende the fertile

ground was set to bloom.

DUENDE

Ben Vardi aka Duende is a Scottish/Chilean producer, DJ, promoter and

percussionist. Drawing inspiration from his South American roots, his

sound is a high energy blend of Latin, Carribean & UK bass music. Focussed

on bringing positive energy, uplifting sets while his productions seek to

push the boundaries of genres and make connections between cultures.

Duende started in Glasgow 2022 initially as a party. These nights

celebrate Latin music and showcase a wide variety of live acts and DJs.

These parties channel the carnival energy of Latin America. Past guests

include, Volta 45, Los Chinchanos, Manzanita Jr Y Su Junto, Orchestra

Boreal, Killabeatmaker, Kaya M & Ritmos Choluteka.
